JULY 2017

Come to Me all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.
(Matthew 11:28,29)

Dear Friend,

Trusting that all is well with you and your loved ones. Happy summer! Can you believe that half a year has gone by already? As I am growing older I find that time just flies by too quickly! Here we are in July, enjoying the summer and hopefully taking advantage of any time off that we might have. Just about all year long we keep working, we keep "pressing in, we hardly ever take time to just be.  I know that is the way it tends to be with me. Deadlines come, and work has to be accomplished, and in between, instead of resting, thoughts of other items that will need to be done pop up.”

Recently, I was so busy that I began to wonder what was going on?  All the deadlines I had were ones that I looked forward to accomplishing, but I was exhausted!  I actually made myself take a day in bed to feed on God's Word and sleep.  That day led to another day because once I wound down, my body demanded that I do so.  And you know what?  It was okay, I was allowed! Smile... I speak for myself and possibly you do, too, when I say that we are sometimes so very hard on ourselves!  We feel that if we do not accomplish everything, that we have wasted a day.  That also goes for homemakers, not just pastors or those in ministry, or in the work force.  When my children were growing up I was home with them, and was a full time homemaker.  Every woman here knows what that is like!  I had my chores down pat, each one had a day, and there was a schedule for each day.  It worked out fine, because my time with my children was precious to me and I did not want to miss anything as they grew up.  However, Jesus reminds us in Matt. 11:28 and 29, that His yoke is easy and His burden is light. He wants us to find rest for our souls, and how do we find that?  By reading His Word and taking quiet time to be alone with Him!  Even then we can say, but, the baby is crying! or, I need to get that report in, it is expected! or, company is coming, the house is a mess!  Does this sound familiar?  Okay, if you are in school, homework is expected.  If you are the breadwinner, you must work.  Still, with all these things, somehow, if we make time to be with the Lord, if we take time to reconnect with His Word, He will see to it that our time is stretched...that somehow, we will still get things done.  I have seen that over and over again in my life! The best thing is, when that happens, when I allow Jesus to stretch my time, He has a way of giving me double time!  Somehow, the work gets done, and surprise!  It went very smoothly, and there was no pressure on my part.  How amazing is that?  Our Lord and Savior, who loves us with an everlasting love, who loves us in spite of ourselves, who loves us, not by our performance, will give us exactly what we need because we have put Him first! We have taken time out to spend with Him, and He loves it!  He loves us so much that He stands and waits for these special times.  He quietly woos us to Himself and in gentleness whispers in our ears... "come to Me, all you who are heavy laden, and I will give you rest."  Wow!  This rest is better than a good nights sleep!  This rest is better than a week at the seashore or the mountains!  It is a rest of spirit, soul and body!  When we feed our soul, it gets nourished by the Word of God, and that nourishment enters into our whole being. It is more than a great dinner at our favorite restaurant!  It fills us to the brim with great Food for the soul that will last way past the time of digesting it.  His Word brings life, and health, and joy!

Years ago so much emphasis was on not just reading and studying the Word, it was ”also on memorizing it.  Think of this.... what if you were stranded on a desert Island, with nothing, just yourself?  What promises would you rely on to get you home? What Scriptures do you know by heart that you could feed your soul with?  Would you be able to keep yourself sane and comforted by Scripture verse that you have taken to heart?  I was given this scenario when I was newly Born Again.  What if I were in a prison for being a Christian, and of course was not given a Bible to read?  What would keep me sane and at peace during that time?  Would I be able to remember the promises written in His Word?   Would I be able to stand on a Word that would hold me during that time?  I would like to challenge you this summer by asking you to memorize something in the Bible. It could be a promise, it could be something that Jesus said, it could be a Psalm, it could be any Scripture verse that touches your heart, that fills you with peace.

Take time off to rest when you can, take time to study the Word of God, take time to memorize a passage.  You will see that you will have strength that you did not know you had; you will have peace; you will have joy; and you will have a much closer walk with the One who loves you more than anyone else does.  Your summer will be a time that you will always remember as the summer that you met with Jesus and enjoyed His company.  You will feel healthier, happier, more peaceful, and hungry for more!  It will be a new start in your Christian walk.  As you speak with Him, He will answer through His Word.  Passages will open up, will stand out, and speak to you.  Now this is important.

Before you open your Bible, ask Holy Spirit to bring God's Word to you, and fill you with new understanding, hope, and joy.  Ask Him to speak to you and give you a Word from God.  Holy Spirit is Faithful, He will surprise you with a new understanding of God's Word as you keep reading.  "Father, in Jesus's Name I lift up this reader, and I ask You to touch him or her in a powerful way.  As this reader searches out the Gems written in Your Word, I ask that you give him or her a Word, one that will speak out to bring a Word in season, one that will bring understanding and hope. Amen!"

God bless you!
